All for now and until next time, happy hunting at Yesterday's Treasures!
For book collectors, it seems that the pursuit of the first edition is the only thing that matters. It doesn't have to be that way. I am as guilty as anyone for being, as Orwell put it so delicately in an essay he wrote on working in an old bookshop, "a first edition snob." There are actually many, many avenues to collecting books that do not require first editions. For example, my wife Caroline collects the Perry Mason mysteries by Erle Stanley Gardner. As you can see in the above example, many of them have fantastic illustrated dust jackets. It is these that she likes to collect and though she has some first editions she also has a number of book club editions, usually dreaded by collectors but in this case welcomed with open arms. Perry Mason books have been often reprinted (TV shows will do that for a book) so here is an example of reprint. The illustrated jacket is gone and replaced with a photographic one. So in this case, the collector is trying to be complete, because she loves the stories, but if she finds a copy of, The Case of the Mischievous Doll in its illustrated jacket, she will be more than willing to trade or sell the photo jacket copy.
All for now and until next time, happy hunting at Yesterday's Treasures! Yesterday's Treasures will be closed on the 4th of July. We will reopen with regular hours on Saturday the 5th. Thank you!!
Some items are available to rent for parties, weddings, photo shoots and so on. Sometimes a special piece can add just the look you want. Come in and take a look around or feel free to call with your inquiry. 219-926-2268 Earlier we took a look at how one of our vendors, Sandy (Booth 71), upcycles items by re-purposing them into something else. Today, we wish to draw your attention to the new "Workshop" area; here one can size up numerous "project" pieces for the more traditional idea of upcycling, which is restoring an existing item to its original purpose. Come take a look and see what grabs your imagination! Antique White Fireman's Chair $50 Some pieces just need to be refinished... ...others need a bit more work! Why not come in and see what project fits your skills, needs and budget? See you soon!! Incredible gift ideas can be found all over the mall. One of the underappreciated aspects of shopping at the antique mall is the fact that we are, to one extent or another, re-cycling previously used items. Some vendors take this a step further and "Upcycle" items either by improving an older piece or, as in the case of Sandy in Booth 71, re-purposing one altogether. Sandy explained that she takes unwanted or disposed of windows, furniture, fixtures and hardware and creates something new and different out of it. For example, a window might find new life as a coffee table or cabinet. In this example, Sandy has taken an old window and used it to create the door of a new cabinet. She re-uses hinges, doorknobs and other fixtures to create the look she wants and in this case used old barn wood to build the rest of the piece. Items don't have to have a radically different purpose. This compact kitchen table with pull out leaves was cleaned up and painted and re-purposed as a desk. This old radio is finding second life as a wine rack. It's been painted to match the bottles. There are many ways to approach upcycling and we will be looking at others in the future. Sandy's unique creations can be found upstairs in Booth 71.
